New Zealand

New Zealand has failed to build enough houses in the main centres as population gains increasedemand for rentals beyond the market’s ability to supply.

Here is a new chart, prepared in Numbers and displayed in Datawrapper for the whole of NZ including all the smaller regions.

The drop in the latest few weeks may be due to landlords abandoning renting as some are guessing, but I think it is simply a result of some changes in some markets, eg Otago market is down a long way from normal due to the annual advertising effort coming earlier in response to the shortage of properties. Auckland market, the biggest, still has more properties on offer than any year since 2014.

I think the country has sold too many government properties. We are continuing last year’s shortage that seems to be only just discovered by Trademe as well. This week the trend is ugly again.
