New Zealand has failed to build enough houses in the main centres as population gains increasedemand for rentals beyond the private market’s ability to supply. This is driving rents in some regions faster than incomes.

2019 continues to show a decline in inventory. Early work on why suggests a lack of growth in rental supply compared to previous years. Only Auckland and Christchurch are immune from the shortage.


I think the country has sold too many Housing NZ properties into the private market. Last year’s shortage has continued with a further drop of around 10% since mid January. HOWEVER THE NEW CONSTRUCTION RATE OF HOUSING NZ IS SUCH THAT THIS COULD CHANGE QUICKLY
